An old box and a new job title

Marquetry box big

When I was 4 I loved visiting my Nana’s house in the North. It was short of toys but full of strange and vaguely magical things to explore like┬áthe box above. When she died at a hundred and a half it was the one thing I asked for. The contents had turned to drawer clutter of course apart from, mysteriously, some old Scalextric track supports.

I thought about that box again recently when I was making some business cards. With it’s intricate marquetry it’s probably a cabinet maker’s Apprentice piece marking his transition to Journeyman. It’s no Master piece but it does demonstrate a craft, there’s a lot of learning and practice behind it. I suddenly wasn’t so comfortable claiming the title Craftsman on my business cards.

I settled on Maker, for now.
