When I was 4 I loved visiting my Nana’s house in the North. It was short of toys but full of strange and vaguely magical things to explore like the box above. When she died at a hundred and a half it was the one thing I asked for. The contents had turned to drawer clutter of course apart from, mysteriously, some old Scalextric track supports.
I thought about that box again recently when I was making some business cards. With it’s intricate marquetry it’s probably a cabinet maker’s Apprentice piece marking his transition to Journeyman. It’s no Master piece but it does demonstrate a craft, there’s a lot of learning and practice behind it. I suddenly wasn’t so comfortable claiming the title Craftsman on my business cards.
I settled on Maker, for now.
